Insect control for poultry and livestock operations

Insect pressure on a poultry or livestock operation isn’t one problem, it’s two. Structural pests living in the facility itself, and insects directly attacking the animals, need different products applied in different ways, and treating them as the same problem is a common source of wasted product and poor control.

Darkling beetles and hide beetles live in poultry house litter and structural surfaces, not on the birds. Applied as a surface, spot, or crack-and-crevice treatment to floors, walls, and support beams, inside the structure or within 25 feet of its perimeter.

On-animal pests
Permetrol
Flies, lice, ticks, and mites that attack livestock directly need a product labeled for animal application. Controls horn flies, face flies, stable flies, deer flies, lice, ticks, and mites through direct spray or wipe-on application.
Labeled for cattle, swine, horses, and poultry.
Cat safety: Permethrin is highly toxic to cats. Permetrol should never be applied to cats or used anywhere cats might contact treated surfaces, worth flagging clearly if barn cats are part of the operation.
Why the distinction matters
A facility insecticide like ImidaPro 4SC isn’t labeled for direct animal application, and an animal-labeled product like Permetrol isn’t the right tool for structural beetle populations living in litter and wood surfaces. Running the correct product for each problem, rather than reaching for whichever is on hand, is the difference between actual control and ongoing pest pressure that never fully resolves.

Treat facility surfaces with ImidaPro 4SC ahead of beetle population buildup, particularly between flocks during clean-out
Apply Permetrol to animals on a schedule matched to fly and tick pressure in your region, rather than only after an infestation is visible
Keep the two applications and equipment separate, don’t use structural spray equipment for animal treatments or vice versa
Reassess between production cycles, litter condition and structural pest pressure change as houses age and accumulate organic material
